Create a custom packing list with the Universal Packing List

packing list When it comes to packing for other people, I do a pretty good job: I remember socks, pj's, all the really important stuff. However, when it comes to packing for myself, I seem to forget everything I'm going to need to get through a normal day. In fact, I usually end up making an emergency run to the nearest drugstore for stuff I've left at home.

That's where the Universal Packing List comes in. This is a fantastic site that helps you customize your packing list to the nth degree: by weather, destination, trip dates, what you want to see, your luggage size, and more. If you're a forgetful packer like me, this site is a lifesaver!

    More travel help:

    • Organize your travel plans with Tripit: In order to avoid various unpleasantries that were experienced in last year's excursions (getting lost, missed reservations, etc.) I decided to look around the Web for something that would help me organize things better. I found TripIt, your own personal travel assistant.
    • Yapta: Find travel deals, and use Yapta's tag tool to keep track of the prices you've found. Yapta will then notify you if those prices go down, therefore potentially saving you a lot of money.
    • Find Flight Information Online: Track your flight on the Web via a variety of methods.
    • Take a Trip with Roadside America: If you're taking a road trip in the United States anytime soon, you're definitely going to want to check out RoadsideAmerica.com, your "online guide to offbeat tourist attractions."
    • Find a Last Minute Vacation: If you have an itch to get out of town, but haven't booked way in advance at your favorite hotspot, have no fear - the early bird doesn't always get the worm. You can find lots of good deals on last minute vacations on the Web.

    Find bargains with Ask Deals
    ask deals

I'm a very cheap thrifty girl, so anything related to finding good deals or grabbing some awesome coupons is right up my alley. You can do both of these with Ask Deals, a simple aggregate of ongoing sales all over the Web in one convenient place.

There are five categories here: Top Deals, Expiring Soon, Recently Added, Free Shipping, and Printable Coupons. Browse through the posted deals, or do a search for a specific item. For example, my search for Gymboree pulled in $10 coupons, a Fill a Bag sale, and a 30& off coupon! Not bad for two seconds work.

How to find the best Twitter backgrounds on the Web

twitter backgroundsIf you've been using Twitter for any length of time, you've probably noticed that many people have spiffed up their personal Twitter backgrounds with all sorts of fun stuff: favorite photos, information about their business, images from their favorite TV show, etc. There are a lot of sites that offer Twitter backgrounds for free use or for a small fee, but not all of them are good. Here are the top five Twitter background sites that I like to visit:

    • TwitterPatterns: Most of these patterns are very retro, which I love. All are going for about $5.00.
    • Twitter Backgrounds: Great selection here of free, personalized, or custom backgrounds (the custom ones you'll have to pay for).
    • TwitPaper: HUGE assortment of free Twitter backgrounds with enough variety to satisfy even the pickiest Tweeter.
    • BGPatterns: Make your own tiled Twitter background from a great selection of patterns.
    • Noupe: Utterly gorgeous designs here that you can easily slip into your Twitter background settings.

Want to create your own Twitter background? You can do that, and pretty easily. Here are a few great tutorials:

    • TwitBacks: In less time than it takes for you to watch a commercial break, you can make your own personalized Twitter background - and for free.
    • How to Create a Custom Twitter Background: Little bit more advanced instruction here for those folks who want to make their Twitter page really stand out.

Oh, and if you want to get some serious inspiration, check out these amazing Twitter background galleries:

Do you have a special Twitter background? Check mine out at @wboswell; I'd love to hear from you!

Is that site down for everyone, or just me?

down for everyone or just me

Here's the scenario: you try to access one of your favorite sites (maybe one of the sites you're addicted to), and the darn thing won't load for you. You try, over and over again, and STILL no joy. You know that it really should be coming up, so you type the URL into your favorite search engine to see if there's anyone else having the same problem. Unfortunately, search engines just don't index result quite that fast (yet), so it seems as if you're the only person having the problem, and you're just going to have to wait it out. Bummer!

That's where Down For Everyone Or Just Me comes in. This is an ingenious site, and here's how it works: simply type in the name of the site that's not cooperating with you, and within seconds you'll see if this mysterious downtime is a more widespread problem (or if it's really JUST YOU). This is an easy way to troubleshoot where the connectivity problem might be happening.

Google Wonder Wheel - have you tried it?

Google has a few search options that many people are not aware of. First, Search Options, a collection of tools you can use to filter your searches: by type (reviews, videos, images, etc.), by time (most recent, a week ago, etc.), related searches that you can use to expand your query, and more. You can access these expanded search options by first typing in your initial query, then clicking on the Search Options link. My favorite? Finding images from the text on the page that your search results are on. Next, the well-named Wonder Wheel!

    wonder wheel

The Wonder Wheel takes your search phrase and shows you related phrases; for instance, my search for "tennis" brought back "history of tennis", "tennis rules", "wimbledon", etc. Last, but not least, the Timeline.

    timeline

The Timeline shows you searches for your query in a chronological manner - you can see all the search results for tennis here go clear back to 1780!
